May Day and the first Saturday in May

It is May Day. Lady Day. Beltain. All good things. I am wearing spring green. I am smiling. On the outside.

Coming back from Wampsville this morning (whew--one thing checked off the stress list) I noticed the trilliums are in bloom along the highway. Good things.

Tonight I go with Duchezz and the Wonderful Jane to a Grand Matron's visit, wearing the new gown I got on sale (SIZE 6!!) and Duchezz will be wearing the gown I found for her, that she loves. Happy Anniversary, a little early, sweetheart.

Tomorrow we come home, get the dogs, and with luck, I will be able to watch the Derby. Not wearing silk taffeta, as I did 18 years ago, the first Saturday in May.

Not wearing a crown of flowers.

Not surrounded by friends, and joy, and hope.

But the jockey's granddaughter will watch the Derby, with a Duchezz, and pugs, and kitties, and bourbon.

Lots of bourbon, perhaps.

And still, there is love.

=hugs= and a Happy Anniversary to all of you. How lucky we all are to have those wonderful memories, to have that kind of love, even if destined for only a short time. And just how much time would be, could ever be "enough"?

Cool, I didn't know that your grandfather was a jockey. The stories that he must of told.

I never knew him. He died in 1926 saving a horse during a stable fire--a horse broke away from someone else and trampled him to death.

But, during his career he won both the King's Cup (now the Queen's Cup--all depends on whose on the throne) in Canada and the Havana Stakes, as well as a bunch of others.

My dad was in line to follow in his footsteps, but he took shrapnel in his knee in Belgium in 1944, so that pretty much put an end to that.

Naw--Hot Browns are best served when one is tipsy, just before dawn.

For food I'll take Burgoo (or some pork bbq), preceded by some Benedictine dip and raw shrimp. Maybe some corn pudding.

Grasshopper pie for dessert, please.

(Of course, my daddy having grown up in Covington, just across the Ohio from Cinncinatti, we generally had chili-spagette. It's a family thang.
