The washing machine, that is. After nearly 20 years of loyal service. Owes us nothing, but it is still inconvenient.

Given that laundromats seem to be a vanishing institution, said item will have to be replaced sooner, rather than later. And there is that whole plumbing issue to deal with. And while we're at it we ought to replace the dryer as well, especially since it barely functions and cannot be repaired (it also is nearly 20 years old. Yes, Rhi, that dryer)since the parts are no longer available.

Ya know, after awhile, chewing gum, spit, and baling twine just ain't enough to keep things together.

Le sigh.

My mother recently replaced her Dryer. She felt kind of cheated because there was no reason for it to fail, it had given her years of service since she bought it in 1973. I guess she felt it should last forever or something. She went to the place she bought it to ask about parts, and she even took the original recipt with her. The original guy who sold it to her was there. He sold it to her in the first few moths he worked there, and when my mom came in again, he was planning his retirement party.

I have a washer and a dryer I do not currently need, washer has some balance issues but is not very old about three years, drier is in great shape and about 6 years old. If you can find someone to hall them to you, you can have them for free.

Check on getting Home Warranty, they may be able to give you cash to replace the washer dryer so it might be worth the initial investment. Also, they get cut rate prices from manufacturers so you can save a lot of cash.

Oh phooey! My washer is pushing 40, so I understand. In the past 6 years I'm on my 3rd dryer, but the washer keeps chugging.

May I recommend front-loading?

on the plus side, the new front-loader washers and things they have out now are much better/cheaper on water/energy to run. i forget if one can get any tax breaks for 'switching' to more energy/environment-friendly appliances...

I think you can get tax benefits for switching to energy star appliances, AND I got mine at a "scratch & dent world" kind of place for MUCH cheaper than in a regular store. That said, willing to haul whatever will fit in the van wherever you want it. Can probably arrange use of truck/trailer if needed...

About two years ago, I choked on the price tag and spent the money for the front loader washer & dryer. Never looked back. It was, by far, one the best investments we ever made. Water bill dropped by 40% and the electric bill dropped by 20%. It is a good thing when the dryer actually dries the clothes in my life time! :)With 5 adults (or adult sized humans) in the house, 17 pair of jeans in hours -wash-to-wear- is wonderful!
