Grades are done and submitted. My summer class starts May 31, so I've got at least a little time to de-frag the mental hard drive, and deal with some life.

Took a break in the middle today to go to Thor with chosen brother, his beloved, and her eldest, then dinner before coming home to finish the last class's work.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to excavate my office, and then go to one of the "Yippee! the Academic Year is Over" shindigs.

But now, it's time for bed.

HA!

We still have a month and a half to go. We have students until June 17, then regents exams/grading/meetings! (what do we do with the ones who passed somethings but not others? How do we schedule with so few teachers?) until June 24th.
THEN I get a bit of time to try to do some stuff I have promised for Pennsic.......
I envy you - we are in the Trying-to-Motivate-Middle-School mode, and it gets worse every year as more and more people think It Is All Due to the Teachers, and fewer think about Student Effort.

I've always thought that a special, especially cushy, part of heaven should be reserved for Middle School teachers. Seriously.

So, today I got to my office. Puttered around. Finally got to my email around 11:40. There was a 15 minute old note from a student. Who'd attended about 1/3 of the classes for the semester, almost all of those since midterm. She wanted to know when I'd be in my office this week so she could drop off her missing work.

I told her my grades were due at 12 noon today, and had already been submitted. That she could drop off her work, and if it affected her grade I'd submit a change of grade, but for now her grade was as posted.

I have at least 1/5 of my students who genuinely believe that if they just come to class and attempt the tests (even if they get 40% or less) then that's good enough for a D. And then when a concerned parent calls about how to "help Johnny do better" and "is he turning in his work" I have to tell them that Federal Law prohibits me from discussing the student's behavior or progress with them. And then there is screaming. Or the parents who call and threaten me with lawsuits since their child is clearly a better student than the C I gave her.

But I can understand your envy of the the mid-May stop. I envy your September start (we start mid August) and week long breaks. It all evens out. We're doing the work we do best, in an increasingly hostile environment, with ever more ungrateful "clients/consumers." Look at the bright side--it's not like we'll either of us be doing it for another 30 years. :-/
