It was a really odd weekend--though I'm not sure if that really applies anymore to our life: maybe an odd weekend is one spent in the house and yard for 2 days working on stuff.

Saturday Ro and Morguhn were both double booked, so Ro met us at Don Reynold's (Thorvald's) memorial service. She missed the service (which son Michael (Boris) performed with quiet dignity and love). Paul's girlfriend has a beautiful voice, and she and Paul and John did very well (with everything except the Doxology, which the congregation helped with). Got to meet Kevin (Haakon) and Michael's oldest brother and Val's (Eleanor's) mother. It was a strange group of family, friends, and SCA folks. It was wonderful to see Paul--he got two days leave to come up for the service. The Army is really agreeing with him.

After the service Val took me through the house, including the second story where all the fire damage is. You've got to love old post and beam--the stuff is like iron. They only have to replace a half dozen 2x8 beams--the big 8x8s are a little charred here and there, but still completely sound. How cool is that? They think they'll have everything fixed by sometime in the fall. Their apartment is now livable by any standard except the state's.

One of the kids is trying to collect SCA songs and asked us for help on ones he didn't know. I wonder how big a grin Dad and Mom had in heaven as we stood in the yard by the memorial tent singing "Barrett's Privateers"?

Morguhn left for his second booking right after the hamburgers came out, and Ro and I hung around for awhile, then home where the evening was spent watching Morguhn play Baldur's Gate II on the XBox.

Sunday was more cleaning for me, trying to excavate the cave I call my room, which I did with Gettysburg playing on TNT. That means that twice in 6 days I watched Pickett's Charge. What am I--sick? I always try to watch Gettysburg over the weekend of the 4th. It never fails--the fight for Little Roundtop and the Charge always leave me with tears flowing silently down my face to the point where I'm utterly drained--that's why I spread watching it over the full three days. At one point Lee says "It is all my fault," and the Confederate soldiers are crying "No!" I'm of the opinion that it WAS his fault and why the hell did he pick that engagement to have a complete brain fart. Grrrrr.

Around 2 we went off to see Fantastic Four. I was a little nervous about the reviews, but we had a blast. I started reading the comic in the 60's--I think my first exposure was issue 10 or something, so I felt right at home. The movie was a pretty faithful adaptation of the simple, straightforward, "Man we are so messed up, but in the meantime, let's hit the bad guy" premise of the original. And, frankly, Julian McMahon was PERFECT as the best villian ever (to whom George Lucas should be paying royalties). Just my opinion; your mileage may vary.

Sunday night was more Baldur's Gate downstairs, so I went back up to the cave and flipped back and forth between Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the only HP movie worth watching more than once), Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Meant I got to skip most of the annoying Frodo parts.

I tend to do that, skip back and forth, which is probably why I'm reading three fiction books simultaneously--Lord of the Isles by David Drake, Artemis Fowl, and The Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings. Not entirely sure I like any of them. Oh well.
