I read The Lightning Thief last year and liked it, but only just. I actually like this entry in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series more than the first. Perhaps it's because there is a lot less of the foregrounding and more story. Maybe it's that it isn't quite so much "cross-country buddy movie" and is more grounded in the mythology. Certainly as someone who had devoured Edith Hamilton's Mythology by the age of 11 so many times that I needed a new copy I am a sucker for the stories.
Yes, it's uneven. Yes it's geared toward YA readers. Still--marvelously diverting, and I have the sense of wanting to read the next installment, not just the "Oh, I guess I want to see where this is going" reaction that often hits me after the second volume in a series.
