My online class "went live" at midnight. So, after the Fall Semester That Shall Forever Be Remembered As Folly (translation: should have took everyone's advice and not tried to teach after losing Morguhn), I am, this semester, teaching an entirely new-to-me course (Film Appreciation) in a new venue (large lecture hall) and a new version of my old friend, College English, in an also new venue--totally online.
I thought this was a good idea why?
But I digress.
One of the requirements for the online class is that they set up an LJ that must be "unlocked"--they can, of course, post locked entries, but the idea here is to get them to post in the danger zone that is the open internet. Awhile back I solicited input about good blogs. I got many really good references, and now my personal reading life is even more full--thank you (I think). I winnowed the list down so as to not give them overload. I tried to balance male and female, super graphic with not so much, and tried to give a variety of tones place on the list. I had to be careful not to give them anything that would send up hackles. The only thing I didn't get was a referral to a blog that was clearly authored by a person of color (which is why I couldn't list the blog thingswhitepeoplelike, which I thought was a great exemplar, but I had nothing to balance).
Anyway, for the curious, here is a portion of what I posted to my students (sans the live links, just titles):
( For those of you who miss being in school )
And, for those of you keeping track, I haven't done the self-report yet, but I did find last year's, so now I can start. Thanks for asking. Yes, I am a slacker. Yes, some things never change, no matter which side of the desk you're sitting on. I suspect my "last minute" students don't believe me that I completely understand them. I do. But I never thought my doing things at the last minute was something the instructor should care about, and certainly never thought it should be excused. It's a self-imposed panic situation, whether for them, or for me.
Consider the panic button pushed.
Ta!
