Six degrees

First of all, thanks to the blogophiles! You guys are wonderful. Great variety, and just what I was looking for (I just have to be careful and not get hooked on any of them or I'll have no time)!

Second, I was thinking. Oh, no! Not that! you cry. Just a little think. No reason to be scared.

Over on Facebook someone invited me to join the "Six degrees" group. My Facebook list is teeny (which is okay by me), but more importantly, since by my reckoning I am variously 2-4 degrees from the entire entertainment world of note (since I have the dubious distinction of knowing Jay McInerney, and he knew the Brat Pack, and they, well, know just about everyone, and I know various other people on Broadway, at the Metropolitan Opera, etc.), and since, if my math is right, I am 4 degrees from Bill Clinton, who knows everyone else, I'm done. I mean really, what more is there?

Not smug about it--just think it's funny--and more than a little silly since it sort of defines "meaningless connections."

I have a Kevin Bacon number of three: I was in "Quest of the Delta Knights" with David Warner (1) He was in "Star Trek Six" with Christian Slater (2) Christian Slater was in "Murder in the First" with Kevin Bacon (in fact, I have a couple of routes to Mr. Bacon). My Grandfather knew Jerry Brown and Al Gore and Depak Chopra. And I have a cousin who staffs for Schumer and knows all the democratic biggies. But we live on the coasts. The farther inland you get the more tenuous the links tend to become.

You are at most three degrees from Bill Clinton, and possibly two, as I met him to talk with for several minutes after Katrina. If that's not quite good enough, and you want someone who Clinton knows as well, you still come in at three max via Cariadoc's dad. And of course, if you know anyone reasonably political (congressman/mayor of someplace as large as Utica/university president/etc..) I suspect you're back down to two more legitimately.

Oh, I'll take yours (I don't count my connection unless it is someone I've actually had a conversation with, and while I have been introduced to Cariadoc, I don't count that as a conversation).

My connection was via politicrats in one direction and my friend at the CIA in another. This is much more direct! ;-)

I have been introduced to Cariadoc, I don't count that as a conversation).

That should be remedied. Like him or dislike him, Cariadoc is a fellow most SCAdians should experience at least once. If you like, and you're going to Pennsic this year, I'd be glad to take you around the Enchanted Ground bardic circle some night.
