The Geek in Me Can Not Be Stilled
Saw the Star Trek trailer. Okay--the machinery is all too shiny and pretty. Too plexiglass. Not enough "1940s aircraft carrier" and waaay too much circa 2008 ops room. But, well, I'm prepared to accept this "young Spock" and, well...I'm too much of a total Star Trek geek not to be overjoyed. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(How big a geek am I? Back when rocks were soft, before DVDs, before VHS, I put my cassette recorder in front of the speaker on the television and made audio tapes of EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of the original series, put the titles of the individual episodes on the tapes, numbered them (in the order originally aired), and listened to them. Repeatedly. They got me through my BA. That, and reading The Lord of the Rings twice a year. We won't talk about the posters. Framed. Or that model kit. Or the embroidered patches. Or the Enterprise necklace. I'm that big a geek. I guess the secret's out.)

I never got to watch the original series when it aired because I was overseas at the time but when it was in reruns in the 70's in was a staple in our house, Christmas ornaments and all.
I'm looking forward to this one.
Oh, and yes, we used to recite the names of all the dwarves (from the Hobbit) all the time. Just finished watching LOTR and the special features as part of our end of baseball season ritual.

Amazingly, I still have my cassette tapes from then, though I currently have no way to play them.
When I was in college, we used to play the identify this episode game, which I always won. My room mate quick the day the first frame came on and I said "City On The Edge Of Forever" (the standard orbit shot got done backwards, and so the Enterprise is orbiting the planet backwards from the normal way.)
And December 16, 1973 is strangely etched in my memory. That's the day the teaser came on, and it went, and went, and I didn't recognize it, and it suddenly occurred to me that this must be the one episode I had never seen - "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield". So even though it isn't really a very good episode, it still remains one of my favorites. Besides, it shows just how bad Starfleet security procedures are - it was the first use of the auto-destruct sequence, and years later, when they go through it again, THE DAMNED CODES HAVEN'T BEEN CHANGED IN THE INTERVENING YEARS.
Sorry, I'm better now.

*giggle*
I suspect we love the imperfections as much as anything else.

By the way, I learned to sew and to embroider so I could make my first Captain Kirk shirt. But then, it's been well documented that *I* am a geek. :)

I'm a Trekkie too
Also wore an IDIC necklace, which I still own. And made little cardboard pins of the uniform badges.

Live Long and Prosper! (Oh, and James Tiberius Kirk will *always* be the best of the Captains for me...though Janeway is a very close second.)

And I got to serve George Takei breakfast at the dining hall when he visited Fredonia. He was very gracious. :-)

And yeah--children of geeks. I vividly remember watching the first episode with my parents. We were blown away. When it was over Daddy said, "Okay, that's one for this year." It was back in the day when we eagerly picked up the new season TV Guide, looked through and planned what we would watch during premier week, then watched our picks and gave them a thumbs up or down (very democratic TV house). That would set the TV viewing schedule for the year.
I kinda miss that.
