I was taught (at Ft. Benning) taht it was Gen McAuliff who uttered the words, "Aw, nuts," and they were made formal by Col. Kinnard who was (I think) his Chief of Staff). I could be wrong because you're dealing with an old and faulty memory here.

Gen. McAuliff was the CO because the real CO of the 101st Airborne (Gen Maxwell Taylor) was in Washington at the time. If you ask anyone from the 101st they'll tell you they didn't need rescuing either.
